According to Juniper Research, ad-funded MMS revenues are set to take-off over the next five years with annual growth rates reaching 94%. SMS and mobile email will, however, continue to dominate the person-to-person (P2P) mobile messaging market.

Juniper ResearchJuniper’s report titled “Mobile Messaging & IP Evolution” also suggests that the Far East & China would lead the global ad-funded MMS market by a considerable margin, followed by North America and Western Europe.

Other highlights from the report:

  • The number of brands using MMS as an advertising medium is growing rapidly, enabling operators to support ad-funded voice and SMS tariffs, and combat falling ARPU.
  • The number of mobile email users will climb by 21% to reach 1.1 billion in 2014.
  • SMS’ share of total global P2P mobile messaging revenues will decline by 18% over the forecast period.

In the same release, Juniper Research praised RIM’s efforts in “breaking new ground in the consumer market” with the addition of custom-built social networking applications for Facebook and MySpace, plus AOL instant messaging and other applications. All these factors earned the BlackBerry maker Juniper’s Future Mobile Gold Award for Mobile Messaging, while the Silver award was given to SpinVox for its voice-to-text messaging service…

More information about Juniper’s report is available from their website.
