Cheap mobile phones, the devices that get sold by the hundreds of millions, are going to sell even more hundreds of millions if what ABI Research just predicted happens to come true. ABI Research thinks that by 2014 a $15 mobile phone will be feasible and that ultra low cost handsets (ULCH) plus low cost handsets (assuming that is defined as under $50) will enjoy a 24% compound annual growth rate by 2014. An ULCH is defined by the GSMA association, today, as a mobile phone that can be purchased for no more than $25. By 2012 that number drops to $20. “The price of a ULCH handset is widely seen as critical to the tipping point for mass adoption in emerging markets.” – Michael Morgan, ABI Research.
