Nokia India has shipped 20 million handsets from its manufacturing hub located at Chennai during the unit’s 11-month existence.

Besides meeting the India demand, Nokia has exported handsets to South-east Asian countries from its Sriperumbudur unit in Chennai.

Nokia’s director, sales, APAC region, Sunil Dutt declined to comment on the kind of handsets Nokia is manufacturing at the plant. "We will have enough capacity to increase the handset production whenever there is greater demand in the market."

Nokia announced a total investment of $150 million in the next few years for its Chennai unit.

"One of the growth areas of mobile handsets is the rural market and we want to be present wherever there is an operator footprint. We want to lower the cost of ownership of the handsets and make it affordable to the people," Dutt said.

Nokia’s lowest-priced handset in the market costs Rs 1799. [$40.84]

Congrats! 20 million units in 11 months is nothing to sneeze at.
