HTC tells Android widget maker to stop making ‘Beautiful Widgets’

beautiful-widgetsHTC is one of the more developer friendly smartphone makers out there. The company usually takes a hands-off approach to developers looking to customize HTC’s Windows Mobile and Android smartphones, which has fostered a “modding” community like no other. But, it seems HTC doesn’t look to kindly on developers that tread on their trademark design aesthetic. HTC has issued a cease-and-desist letter to Android widget developer LevelUp Studio, asking them to stop making “Beautiful Widgets” and remove the wares from the Android Market.

The “Beautiful Widgets” are indeed beautiful. Unfortunately, they’re easy on the eyes because they look a lot like HTC’s own Sense UI, which first made waves on the HTC Hero. LevelUp Studio’s tweet in response to HTC’s letter says it all:

“Bad news: I got a C&D from HTC, I will have to discontinue Beautiful Widgets and remove it from the market”

The widgets have already been removed from the Android Market.
