Spectec SDG-811 brings GPS to your miniSD slot

Here’s an elegant GPS solution for all of you who are looking to add some navigation apps on their handsets, yet dislike the idea of a separate Bluetooth GPS receiver.

Spectec SDG-811

Taiwanese firm Spectec managed to to pack a SiRFStar III GPS receiver into a miniSD card that extends only 3 cm beyond the edge of the slot. You may think this solution will involve a lost of memory storage — think again, the tiny receiver also has an additional miniSD card slot, so you could use your memory ALONG with the GPS. After all, you do need some space to store all those maps.

The strange thing about Spectec SDG-811 is that it only works on Windows Mobile device. I guess some driver is involved, which still waits to be developed for other platforms — and by other platforms I mean Symbian OS. Hopefully, Spectec will release appropriate updates to solve this. In the meantime, if you’re living in Hong Kong, you can sign-up at Expansys to receive updates on the release of this product. Pricing is still unknown though…
