Again this isn’t what we would consider really a mobile news, but it’s important nevertheless. The Samsung Electronics Chairman, Lee Kun-hee, and Sony CEO, Howard Stringer, are to meet on May 24th. It won’t be the clash of the titans, however, but more of a partner talk.
From what we’re hearing, mobile phones won’t be among the areas of discussions, at least not directly. Sony’s Stringer is expected to ask for an increase in supply of LCD panels from Samsung, which in case you don’t know is the world’s largest LCD maker by revenue. Together, the two companies formed a joint venture called S-LCD Corp. in 2004 to ensure stable procurement of flat panels for their products.
Speaking of products, in addition to TV sets, as you know LCD panels are also used in mobile phones, prompting us to speculate “something mobile related” may end up on the agenda, after all. Maybe Sony Ericsson wants to make phones with Super AMOLED touchscreens as well? I’m just speculating…
Anyway, I don’t expect anything major to come out of this meeting, but you never know.
For the record, last month Samsung said that it will continue to strengthen its “competitiveness and market dominance” in the handset and TV business.
