LG and Harris announce new Mobile TV broadcast offering

Whilst we are on the topic of Mobile TV, I thought I would mention the latest variant, announced at CES. LG, along with Zenith and Harris Corporation, used CES to announce a new Mobile TV broadcast offering, called MPH (Mobile Pedestrian Handheld) – or MPH In-band Mobile DTV system, to give it it’s full name. There is some conflicting information as to whether this is an entirely new standard, or whether it’s capable of supporting other standards – however the killer point will likely be how applicable the technology will be to numerous mobile scenarios.

Clearly LG has some experience now in this area, and the explanation from Woo Paik (LG’s CTO) was that the MPH chipsets would go in laptops, in-car systems, GPS units, and (we presume) PMPs (in a similar fashion to Motorola’s DH01 no doubt). Additionally, because the MPH system is backward-compatible with the existing ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) DTV transmitters, it potentially means that little extra in terms of transmitters would need to be added – a huge plus in terms of initial infrastructure outlay costs.

With LGs wide product and solution offerings across home entertainment devices, mobile devices, and other electronic consumables, it’s quite possible they have the weight and momentum to pull this off – to paraphrase Dire Straits: “I want my MTV (on the move, whenever and wherever!)”
