Palm centro unlockedLong-term contracts and carrier-locked handsets are almost a fact of life for many in the US. Sure, Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T have all picked up a Palm Centro to complement their portfolio of smartphones, but the Big Three US wireless carriers are going to want you to sign up for a 2-year stint.

For those of you eyeing a Palm Centro, but don’t want to be forced to sign a contract and use a particular carrier, Palm has announced that you can have your Centro and eat it to. If eating your mobile phone doesn’t appeal to you, you’ll be glad to hear that Palm’s unlocked Palm Centro can also be used on any GSM carrier of your choosing.

That’s right, unlocked GSM Palm Centro smartphones are available to US customers for $299 through Palm online storefront.

And, to ice that yummy Centro-cake, Palm has announced that all Palm Centro users can expect to get Google Maps and the My Location feature that was made popular on the iPhone enabled on their Centro starting June 24. Palm is rolling out Google Maps with My Location to give customers “faster access to local maps and driving directions.”

So, if unlocked GSM smartphones whose names start with “Palm” and end with “Centro” are your cup of tea, head on over to Palm and grab yourself some unlocked GSM icing-on-the-cake.
