Many of you may not have heard of Huawei (pronounced Wah-way) Technologies, but make no joke, these guys are serious when it come to winning mobile infrastructure deals and rolling them out – and now they have the likes of NSN (Nokia-Siemens Networks), AlcaLu (Alcatel Lucent), and Ericsson in their sights!
During the past two years, Huawei has been winning wireless infrastructure contracts with European mobile operators by edging out Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson and Nokia Siemens. Vincent Rech, an analyst at Société Générale, pointed to contracts won by Huawei in 2007 with Vodafone in Greece, Romania and Spain; France Telecom in Belgium and France; and Telefónica in Germany. The contracts underline how Huawei is moving beyond China and other emerging markets.
Interestingly though, Huawei hasn’t had as much success in the US market – but still, it’s 2007 annual report said it generated net income of $673.5mn – so clearly they are doing something right!
It’s been suggested that Huawei wins it’s deals by under-pricing it’s rivals aggressively, and some have also said that it’s “assisted” by the Chinese government – however this is all conjecture towards what is at least on the outside, an increasingly successful telecoms infrastructure provider.
