The solar-powered mobile phone case/necktie is here!

Solar powered necktie

Now this is just the kind of convergence we’ve been waiting for! The solar-powered necktie might not exactly be the idea in mobile convergence, but with photo-voltaic cells woven in to the necktie’s fabric and a pouch to hold your mobile phone, the solar-powered necktie is the epitome of “geek-chic.” Or maybe just “geek.”

The sun-loving necktie is the brainchild of researchers at North Carolina State University. The researchers apparently made a breakthrough that allows them to make use of “digital textile printing” to invisibly integrate solar-cells in to everyday fabrics. A solar-powered jacket was also crafted, but we’ve all seen that particular song and dance before.

The Solar-Tie is definitely a step in the right direction. Clothing that cradles your mobile phone while charging it? Yes, please.

One day we’ll all be wearing solar-powered fabrics. Or at least the geekier among us will be.
