HP CEO Meg Whitman: We need to make smartphones

Last month HP launched a new Mobility business unit with a focus on consumer tablets, but it seems it’s just one piece of the puzzle as the company wants to also include smartphones. Speaking to Fox Business News, CEO Meg Whitman said that HP is eyeing the smartphone market, though no timetable has been set. She said: “We have to ultimately offer a smartphone because in many countries of the world that would be your first computing device. We are a computing company, we have to take advantage of that form factor.”

HP is coming off of a flat third quarter in which the company saw a drop in sales for its PCs and printers, and now investors are pushing it to grow the business.

But is there a space for another entrant in the smartphone market? The chances are slim for HP to do it all alone; perhaps it can join forces with an existing player and take advantage of the scale. We’ll see how that goes…
