Apple used its trusty PR department to announce that its iTunes store has hit the 25 billion song download milestone. The iTunes music store has been a staple on iPods and iOS devices since the store launched in 2003. In these past nine years, the store has expanded outside the US borders to 119 countries and is now home to 26 million tracks.
It’s one of the most popular music stores in the world and boasts of a download rate of 15,000 songs per minute. According to Asymco, iTunes songs are selling at more than twice the rate of physical media. The Google Play Store and newly expanded BlackBerry World also offer music in their respective mobile storefronts. It will be interesting to see how their adoption rate and sales climb over the next few years.
