Liberalization transforms Uganda’s mobile market

Thanks to the market liberalization, mobile phone penetration in Uganda is expected to increase from 39% in 2009 to 70.7% by 2014, according to a new report from Pyramid Research. As a matter of fact, the research company argues that in the next five years, Uganda will experience the second highest percentage increase in terms of mobile subscriptions among the African countries (after Cameroon).

At the moment, there are five mobile operators in the country, three of which are well-established: MTN Uganda, Uganda Telecom, and Zain Uganda. Warid Telecom and Orange Uganda joined the trio in February 2008, and March 2009, respectively, while another one, Anupam is due to enter soon.

As expected, increased competition is driving down prices, with new entrant Warid being particularly aggressive to attract subscribers, and has succeeded to grab 15% of the market, already…
