Perhaps we’ve all become a little too used to carrying around tiny little plastic boxes packed with potentially unstable chemicals. The Li-ion battery that powers most cellphones today can be a reliable power source, making for hours upon hours of mobile fun. But when things go awry inside the battery, they tend to get real hot and burn through stuff. Take this pair of jeans, for example. PPCGeeks user “kidmet” posted his latest run in with a battery from an HTC Touch Pro.
What you see posted here is the result of a spare Touch Pro battery apparently heating up and burning through a pair of blue jeans. The story goes:
“I walked into my house early this week to the smell of burning. I couldn’t find where it was coming from. Last night as I was gathering my laundry I noticed a burn through the back of my jeans. A HUGE hole. I had a spare Touch Pro battery in my back pocket. It had expanded and obviously started a fire in my jeans. They were in a clothes pile and buried, so I assume that there wasn’t enough oxygen to start a fire.”
kidmet claims the battery in question came straight from HTC and wasn’t some cheap Chinese knock-off.
The lesson here? Well, there really isn’t any lesson. Just pray your Li-ion battery doesn’t decide to go all kamikaze on you.
