mediatechtarmMediaTek is the little semiconductor that could. They don’t have their own fab, instead relying on UMC, but their chipset designs are going into an ever increasing amount of handsets in the Asian (and international?) market. Key players such as TI, Qualcomm, and Infineon should be looking behind their shoulders as this little Taiwanese company is hungry and is going into more whitebox handsets than anyone can count. The Commercial Times, a Chinese publication, is stating that the company is on track to ship over 100 million chips in the third quarter, and over 350 million total in 2009. If you think about the fact that in Q2 2009, Nokia alone shipped over 103 million devices, than you’ll appreciate that these guys mean business.
