ITC denies Qualcomm’s request for stay of ruling to ban 3G chips from US import

Reuters is reporting that the ban on Qualcomm’s 3G chips will hold strong. Broadcom said on Friday that the US International Trade Commission denied Qualcomm’s request for a stay on the ITC’s decision to ban imports of Qualcomm’s 3G chips that infringe on Broadcom patents. The decision is a blow to the chip-making giant, as their newly launched 3G chipset will not make it into the super-hot US market.

Broadcom said in a statement, “We have repeatedly communicated to Qualcomm our readiness to negotiate a lasting resolution to these issues — thus far to no avail. The burden of resolving these matters rests squarely with Qualcomm.”

It’s interesting that a federal appeals court had given the ITC until June 27 to make its case for keeping their ban in effect. The ITC announced its denial of Qualcomm’s request days before their decision deadline – they must be pretty sure of themselves. President Bush still has 60 days from the initial ruling-date to overturn the decision. We’re eager to see what happens.

Qualcomm is coming off as a stubborn bully with their refusal to do any sort of practical negotiation with neither Nokia nor Broadcom. What’s with this chip-manufacturing giant that they think they can do whatever they want and expect the world to bow down to them? It seems that even high-powered executives can act like children.
