15% of smartphones sold in South Korea were iPhones in Q3

While the Chinese market seems to be largely ignoring the iPhone, their neighbors in South Korea are embracing the iPhone with open arms. According to Digital East Asia, wireless carrier KT sold something like 60,000 iPhones on launch day. In that one November day, Apple sold 15% of the 400,000 smartphones sold in South Korea for the entire third quarter of 2010. It doesn’t make up for a lackluster Chinese launch, but Apple’s success in Korea isn’t anything to be taken lightly. The fact that Apple managed to come in to a market dominated by homegrown Samsung and LG and gain such a big foothold so quickly could be a sign of things to come.
