Mexico’s telecoms regulator, Cofetel, unveiled the bidding details for its forthcoming radio spectrum auction, saying that 44 companies have registered an interest in the 1850MHz-1990MHz band, while 49 potential bidders brought the paperwork for the 1710MHz-2170MHz auction.

The companies that have purchased bidding documents include the incumbent operators — America Movil, Telefonica, Nextel Holdings and Iusacell — along with landline operators (Axtel and Maxcom Comunicaciones), as well as several media and television companies.

Potential bidders will start submitting questions to clarify issues from next month, whereas formal applications along with deposit bonds are to be submitted by mid-April. Formal bids are set to be submitted by mid-May, and licenses to be awarded around the middle of June.

Cofetel’s plan is to auction nine blocks of spectrum in eight of the country’s nine regions, including Mexico City. The second auction will cover all nine regions and could pave the way for a new national network to be launched…
