Samsung and Ericsson make love, not war – agree to cross-license patents

Samsung Ericsson dealIn a global stand-out example of good-will and cooperation, Samsung and Ericsson just inked a deal to cross-license the other’s intellectual property. Interesting news, considering Ericsson’s patent infringement suit, filed back in August 2006, alleging Samsung of infringing on Ericsson’s mobile phone patents (upon expiration of a 2002 licensing deal in 2005). The handset manufacturing duo saw fit to set their August 2006 differences aside and work together to share their patents regarding 2G and 3G standards. Of course, the agreement stipulates that each side pay royalties to the other.

This kind of happy, getting-along between two industry big-hitters is a refreshing breath of friendly air – a small breeze of hope, if you will, in an environment polluted with lawsuits and trade bans (cough…Qualcomm, cough, Nokia, Broadcom…cough). We just have to give props to the now friendly (again) Samsung and Ericsson collab.
