Broadcom is joining the S60 Product Creation Group today, saying that they will deliver 50 million devices based on their chips within one year. “Broadcom joining the S60 community is a very positive development that will further enhance the silicon resources available to smartphone makers committed to S60 software,” said Matti Vanska, Vice President, Mobile Software Sales and Marketing, Nokia. “The combination of advanced S60 software capabilities and pre-integration with Broadcom’s silicon solutions will help drive new smartphone designs and shorten time-to-market for introducing these products.”

The press release goes on to talk about the BCM 2153 processor, Broadcom’s direct competitor to Texas Instrument’s OMAPV2230. The BCM 2153 brings 7.2 Mbps HSDPA, a 312 MHz ARM11 Core, USB 2.0 On-the-Go support, 30 FPS encode/decode support of h.264, h.263, WMV9 and MP4 at 320×240 all on a single 65 nm chip versus TI’s 90 nm solution.

How will this announcement impact price points is anyones guess at the moment, here is hoping we will one day have something with the spec sheet of the N95 for less than 200 Euros.
