Nokia has announced that they will be supporting the development of widgets for their phones running the S60 Symbian operating system. It looks like this may be Nokia’s answer to Microsoft’s ZenZui interface and Apple’s widget-based interface on their iPhone. But with support for Ajax, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, the Web Run-Time based widgets will be more accessible to developers.
Web Run-Time development environment makes it easier for developers to create widgets, integrate GPS and calendar functions, and even migrate them from their desktop to their S60 device.
Widget-type applications on cell phones give the user quicker and easier access to always-on information, of their choosing. Why go through multiple steps just to check the weather? With widgets, you can just glance at the widget to realize that your galoshes will just look silly on a partly sunny day. You can choose widgets for everything from weather, stocks, sports, news, flight info – just about anything you can think of.
Look for the development tools in the S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, which is expected to drop on us in Q3 of 2007.
