According to an Apple store employee, we could see all our first-generation iPhone docks become all but useless with the launch of the next-generation iPhone 3G – “the iPhone 3G is shaped differently and doesn’t fit in the same dock.” Which is not all that surprising, given Apple’s penchant for continually updating their products, forcing the consumer to pay-up to keep-up.
That’s not to say that everyone with an original iPhone will even want or need the old iPhone dock, but if they wanted to re-use it, all signs point to them being up a certain creek, as the saying goes. Of course, anyone looking to gift or hock their used iPhone on the secondary market will probably be including the iPhone dock as part of the package, so it’s not like there are going to be a lot of first-generation iPhone docks gathering dust somewhere.
Still, if you’ve become accustomed to using a dock with your iPhone, you’ll have to get used to the fact that you’ll likely (unless Apple decides to include it in-box) have to shell out a little more to get an iPhone 3G dock.
So, will dock-incompatibility be a real issue? For most, probably not. But, consider this your warning.
