sony-ericsson-c901-1While it’s fun to speculate about an upcoming handset’s model name and possible feature-set, it’s even more fun when handset makers unveil their hardware earlier than expected. Sony Ericsson just made our day with their official unveiling of the Sony Ericsson C901, once known by its codename “Filippa.” The Sony Ericsson Filippa had been expected to launch at Mobile World Congress as the Sony Ericsson C901, and it looks like all that prior speculation was spot on!

The Sony Ericsson C901 is apparently being aimed at select markets, which is usually code for “not in the US.” With a quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) radio, dual-band 3G (HSDPA), 5-megapixel Cybershot camera (with auto focus and xenon flash), FM radio with RDS, and Bluetooth packed within its sleek shell, the Sony Ericsson C901 is clearly a competent cameraphone with the guts to compete with high-megapixel cameraphones from the likes of Motorola, Samsung, LG, and Nokia.

sony-ericsson-c901-4This latest cameraphone from Sony Ericsson is apparently being positioned a bit down-range from bigger-brother Sony Ericsson C903. While both handsets rock similar cameraphone specs (including Smile shutter, BestPic, Smart Contrast, Face detection, PhotoFix, geo-tagging, etc.), the Sony Ericsson C901 lacks the aGPS and TV-out hardware of the C903.

Sony Ericsson is expected to start shipping the C901 in the second quarter of 2009 (Q2 2009), and will be available in your choice of Noble Black, Sincere Silver and Precious Peach (otherwise known as Black, Silver and Pink-ish).
