Palm is showing off the UMTS version of its Pre smartphone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Not much is known at this stage, but some rumors suggest the Treo maker is in talks with Vodafone, which would certainly help the company access many European markets. As for the release date, we’ve only heard GSM Pre will debut at some point in the second half of the year.
On a separate note, Palm announced that O’Reilly Media will be publishing a book about developing for Palm’s new mobile platform. The book, titled “Palm webOS: Developing Applications in JavaScript Using the Palm Mojo Framework,” will be written by Palm’s VP and Software CTO Mitch Allen and his development team. The first chapter of the book is already available on the Palm Developer Network site, and interested developers will be able to sign up and get new chapters as they’re written through O’Reilly’s “Rough Cuts” service. The complete book will be published upon release of the Mojo SDK.
My two cents? I like the news but I don’t like the timeframe. This time, faster is better! 😉
