RIM’s been working hard to shoehorn a pseudo-BlackBerry-OS into Windows Mobile, but why settle for less when you can run both native operating systems at the same time with VMware? This demo shows a Nokia N800 running Windows CE and Android concurrently with no noticeable lag whatsoever. Why would you want to bother with this? Their pitch is to keep work and personal profile separate, a theme that’s already been emerging in handsets like the Xperia.
While this is the flashier application for VMware, one added bonus is the ability to extract and back up device data, like contacts, regardless of operating system. This also tears down developer walls for interoperability – apps become much less dependent on what platform you’re running if you can run anything else through a virutal machine, much like what we’re seeing with Macs. There are no announcements to be made just yet, but VMware is working with all major platforms and OEMs to see what they can work out. I wonder who will bite first and support this…
