The nation’s largest wireless carrier has gotten a good deal bigger in Q2 2009. Verizon Wireless has announced that its second quarter of this year netted the US wireless carrier a cool 1.1 million subscribers. Big Red’s net subscriber adds fall short of AT&T’s just announced count of 1.4 million additional subs for the second quarter.
Verizon Wireless keeps its lead over AT&T with a total of 87.7 million wireless customers. Of the 1.1 million new net subs on VZW’s network, most signed up under the Verizon Wireless banner, as opposed to resellers like Tracfone Wireless.
Rival AT&T continues to ride the iPhone to success – for how much longer is anyone’s guess. But, Verizon managed to nearly match Big Blue’s growth without an iPhone to call their own. In fact, Verizon is rumored poised to take a giant leap in mobile broadband services with a speculated Q1 2010 launch of their next-generation 4G LTE network. With no plans for LTE until 2012, AT&T might see their iPhone-aided growth slowing as users migrate to Verizon’s faster LTE network.
What about Sprint? What about Sprint indeed.
