The Palm Pre has just become a bit more useful to mobile warriors around the country. Thanks to the WebOS homebrew application “My Tether,” the Palm Pre can now be used as a 3G modem for your computer. My Tether turns your Palm Pre into a 3G WiFi router that works a lot like Novatel’s MiFi 3G WiFi router (also available from Sprint).
My Tether provides an intuitive interface to help you broadcast your own personal WiFi network using your Palm Pre. Unfortunately, WebOS apps like My Tether aren’t going to be available through the App Catalog. That means you’ll have to hack your Palm Pre to give up root access. Once jailbroken, you can direct your Palm Pre to download and install the My Tether app.
My Tether works as advertised. Simply fire up the application, enable WiFi tethering, and use your portable WiFi network as you see fit. The free version of My Tether must be installed using a bit of command-line execution. A $10 version of My Tether comes bundled with a convenient installer and features WEP encryption for the WiFi network, but still requires the user to “root” the Pre.
Head on over to Palm Pre Hacks to find out how to root your Palm Pre and install My Tether!
