Green is the new hotness in tech. No, not the color. I’m talking about eco-friendly mobile devices like the Samsung Reclaim (which is actually a really pleasing shade of green) – devices like the just-announced Solar Surge from Novothink. The Solar Surge is actually the first Apple-sanctioned charging case to hit market with a solar-charging option.
The Novothink Solar Surge is a hybrid external battery/iPhone case/solar charger. Within the sleek green package, the Solar Surge features a 1500mAh lithium-ion battery that should more than double your iPhone’s battery life. The Solar Surge’s internal battery gets charged through a USB 2.0 port or through the solar panels on its backside. A couple hours of sunlight is good for 30-60 minutes of extra talk-time, depending on whether you use 3G or EDGE (2G). Simply clip your iPhone into the Solar Surge and off you go – powered up and protected from the elements.
And, to appeal to all you iPhone-loving eco-fiends, Novothink’s Solar Surge is an official Apple licensed accessory. That means you might soon see a Solar Surge hanging on the rack at your local Apple Store.
The Solar Surge will be available for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS later this year for $69.95. Until then, I’ll keep pushing carbon into the atmosphere by way of my iPhone 3GS charging cable.
