We don’t usually talk about ebook readers at IntoMobile. However, this news item is somewhat different, as we don’t have a major consumer brand releasing its own product, but Chinese Huawei which is usually known for its telecom equipment and low-to-mid range phones. The company plans to offer ebook readers to carriers, which would slap their brand over the device and sell it to consumers.
To fulfill the plan, Huawei is teaming up with Tianjin Jinke Electronics System (also from China), which will develop the terminals for the e-reader. Huawei, on its end, will offer a full-range of back-office software for all the parties involved (carriers, publishers, etc).
The solutions are due to be operational at China Mobile within the next few months, and will be promoted in the European and American markets later on.
Is this going to fly? It’s hard to tell at this stage whether Huawai has the capacity to attract enough publishers. One thing is sure, though – carriers are interested to get their share of this market, as we’ve seen with the Kindle and Sony eReader. Any thoughts?
