Juniper Research has a new report titled “Mobile Cloud Applications” forecasting that the number of enterprise customers using mobile cloud-based applications will rise to more than 130 million by 2014. Key players such as Google and Microsoft will be among key drivers of this growth with their Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) deployments.
Juniper found that as cloud providers are increasingly opening up their APIs to developers, an opportunity is emerging for companies to reduce the costs associated by porting apps across multiple platforms.
The report author Dr Windsor Holden thinks that the cloud-based ecosystem for enterprise apps will be attractive both for developers and enterprises alike: developers get a wider potential audience, whereas enterprise customers reduce costs and get more flexibility by outsourcing application management on a scalable, pay-per-use basis.
Other findings from the report include:
- Storage and infrastructure suppliers have the opportunity to develop mobile-oriented cloud services.
- Consumer applications — including games, social networks and music services — will together generate more than 25% of such revenues by 2014.
