Bet you can’t type this fast on your iPhone

Think you can type fast on your desktop or laptop computer’s keyboard? Well, chances are pretty good that the iPhone user in the video below can tap-type significantly faster with his two thumbs than you can with eight fingers helping your two thumbs. According to an iPhone typing speed test, YouTube user “konceptzoflife” can hit an incredible 83 words per minute on his virtual on-screen keyboard in portrait mode.

To put the 83 wpm typing speed into perspective, a study conducted by IBM and the University of Michigan has determined that the average speed for transcribing text is 33 words per minute. That means this guy can tap out words on a capacitive touchscreen at well over twice the speed that most other people might achieve on a real physical keyboard. He tested his typing speed using the iTextSpeed iPhone app.

Still, as TUAW points out, not even the fastest iPhone typist is any match for the world record holder Barbara Blackburn. She can tickle the plastic beige keys at a jaw-dropping 212 wpm.

How fast can you type? We can’t get past the 50 wpm barrier ourselves. Can you do better?
