Vertu unveils 4 golden phones in Japan

Japan may not be Nokia’s turf anymore, but there’s Vertu – the Finnish giant’s luxury arm that not only sells its super overpriced pieces of jewelry in the Land of the rising Sun, but also operates as (again) an expensive MVNO.

To celebrate the first anniversary of its flagship store in Ginza, Tokyo next month – Vertu has unveiled 4 golden phones — Kinko, Kikusui, Nanten and Daigo — with each representing the different season of the year. It’s a very, very, very limited series, the material is gold (made-in-Japan gold lacquerwork, to be more precise), hence the price of 20 million yen ($215,000) doesn’t surprise. To be fair (or not) that money will also buy you free domestic calls.

As you know, it’s not about specs with Vertu phones – it’s about craftsmanship and precious materials used in building the piece of art. We read that Vertu plans to sell just four of these handsets worldwide, though I’m not sure whether the idea is to offer each of the 4 phones in the series to 4 buyers (making the total number of devices available – 16) or each of the phones in the series is 100% unique. If anyone knows, drop us a line in the comments form below…
