Apple files for ‘Made for iPhone’ trademark

Well, it’s not a big surprise, but Apple has filed for a “Made for iPhone” trademark.

It’s not surprising because it already has trademarked the “Made for iPod” label that accompanies approved accessories and the iPhone is rapidly becoming an important part of Apple’s business – the company’s iPhone OS devices now account for about 40% of its revenues.

A small, but growing, part of this success is the accessories side. It’s not just the ones made by Steve Jobs’ company, as there’s a veritable cottage industry around making cases, docks and adapters for the touchscreen smartphones. An official logo gives Apple some modicum of control because accessory makers will have to adhere to some standards to get the logo. That logo may not be important to the die-hard cell phone fanatics but it could be a reassuring sign for the mainstream. It’s a smart move from Apple.
