Those of you fully disappointed that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 launched with Android 1.6 will be happy to hear that a 2.1 update is on the way. The bad news is that the update won’t be until Q4, by which point Android 2.2 will already be available on many devices. Still, there are a few new features that are worth some attention:
– HD video recording as per the same execution as Sony Ericsson Vivaz
– Wireless home connectivity via DLNA
– Improvements to signature applications Timescape and Mediascape to make them even smarter and richer
That’s great that Timescape is getting an update, since it was a little chunky when I played with the X10, but the keyboard is what really needs work. HD recording is also nice, but still pictures better be improved too – the 8 megapixel left me woefully unimpressed. I’m looking forward to DLNA functions for sure, especially considering Sony’s wide variety of home entertainment products that could potentially plug into the X10. There’s still no mention of multitouch, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for it.
Features aside, the timeline is completely ridiculous. Tthe earliest we can expect a 2.1 update is October, and who knows if it’ll be available for the X10 Mini and Mini Pro, which are shipping with 1.6 hopefully in time for the back-to-school rush.
