A new service has been launched in Italy by Rai television’s Sunday weekly religious programme, allowing Roman Catholics to send text messages of support to Pope Benedict XVI.
The service is obviously a part of the campaign to get some support for the Church, which is facing an international paedophile scandal.
All messages sent to the special number (+39 335 18 63 091) will be passed along to the Pope by the end of May, and will also be shown from Sunday during the TV show “In His Image”.
Commenting on the news, Rosario Carello, the chief of the programme on the Rai Uno channel, said: “It’s a truly unique event, because with this number everyone can show their solidarity without being physically present in Saint Peter’s Square.”
As a reminder, this isn’t the first Vatican’s mobile effort. We’ve already reported that Pope Benedict XVI has used SMS to reach out to World Youth Day attendees. Moreover, he also has its own iPhone app…
