Following a private beta this spring, SlingPlayer for Android is now available to the public. In addition to being able to watch your TV shows streaming from your home TV to your Android phone over the cellular network or Wi-Fi, you can also remote control your DVR to record shows when you’re away from the couch. The HTC EVO 4G is shown prominently in Sling’s banner, and we can imagine why – giant screen + WiMAX connection = awesome TV experience.
The iPhone app raised some issues with AT&T awhile back over clogging up the network, which resulted in a Wi-Fi only version, but they’ve gone 3G since then. There are also apps for BlackBerry and Windows Mobile, if you’re packing a different phone.
Phones need to be running Android 1.5 and up, and apple to get 150 Kbps download speeds to get the app, which has been localized for the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, and Switzerland. The app itself costs a wooping $29.99, on top of the $179.99 and up it costs for the TV hub itself, but thankfully there’s no subscription fee.
