If you’re a Facebook addict, well, you need a life. One man is trying to give you one. There are tons of virtual gifts you can send to people through Facebook and a popular one is a virtual drink.
Enter Bartab, a Facebook andiPhone application that will allow you to buy someone a real drink, at a real bar!
With Bartab, you can buy a $1 dollar drink voucher for anyone which is good for 60 bars in San Francisco, and More cities will be added as time goes on. The recipient will receive a notification through Facebook, text message, or the iPhone app itself, and all you have to do is present the voucher at a participating bar, pay a pouring fee of $1 dollar, and you’ve got a drink.
“Facebook has been charging one buck for virtual drinks but we’re selling real drinks for a buck,” said Johnson, the president of San Francisco’s Webtab. “Why send them a fake drink when you can send a real drink?”
Bartab’s app will make its appearance in New York and Los Angeles by August and more Bay Area bars will get get into the game thereafter. This is a pretty cool idea that will certainly catch on with the technologically hip. This is also another way for bars and restaurants to attract more customers – It’s simple and brilliant. No longer will you Facebook addicts have to drink yourself into oblivion when you have nothing to do on a Friday night except to get “digitally drunk” and give late night pokes to your exes. So even if you’re buying yourself a drink from Bartab, it’s the closest to a life you may ever have! I kid.
I downloaded the app on an iPod Touch and it’s very simple and easy to use. It asks you to log into your Facebook account, and get to sharing some drinks. Of course you need to have some money into the account to do that, but that’s simple too. The app crashed on me twice, I don’t know why, but for the most part it was smooth sailing. If you live in San Francisco, you may want to give this a try!
