SingTel has teamed up with Telmap to offer personal search, mapping and navigation services to its mobile subscribers in Singapore. Using a dedicated application called SingTel Xplorer — which BTW works on any GPS-equipped handset, iPhone and Android smartphones included — users can “turn their mobile phones into a powerful navigation system” with access to a full suite of places of interests (POIs) and real-time traffic updates. There are (as expected) 3D turn-by-turn navigation with voice or map instructions with both Singapore and Malaysia maps. The application works for both drivers and pedestrians.
Telmap collects traffic data from multiple sources such as the physical locations of SingTel’s mobile cell network base and traffic flow feeds. The information is analysed using traffic science calculations and refreshed every five minutes.
As for the local content, SingTel Xplorer lists local businesses, restaurants, hotels and more. In the near future more content will be available such as inSing, global maps, additional places of interest, etc.
