We had heard that the BlackBerry Bold 9700 was going to get OS 6, alongside the Pearl 9100 and the Bold 9650, but until today, have yet to really see it in action. Luckily, there’s a short look at BlackBerry 6 running smoothly on the 9700, focusing primarily on the browser. The 9700 was actually what RIM used to first introduce the WebKit browser, and the reviewer notes that it feels like it runs even faster than on the BlackBerry Torch 9800.
I’ve certainly found pinch-to-zoom to be really choppy, and would happily sacrifice it for more responsive web browsing. There are also a few lags and glitches that I think could be ironed out with updated software – check out my BlackBerry Torch 9800 review under the software section to get an impression of how OS 6 currently runs. Universal search is the biggest feature in BlackBerry 6, but it also introduces an updated user interface on multiple fronts. Check out our rundown of BlackBerry 6 for all the particulars.
For those considering an upgrade to the 9700 after seeing it run OS 6, you might want to hold out for the 9780, which promises to up the camera to 5 megapixels and memory to 512 MB, while keeping the Bold form factor.
