A company called ThinkChange is out with an unofficial Foursquare client for the Symbian S60 5th Edition smartphone community (phones like the Nokia N97, N97 mini, X6, 5800 XM, Samsung Omnia HD, Sony Ericsson Vivaz, etc) simply called Symbian Foursquare. As you can see from the screenshots above, the S60 client looks pretty much like its iPhone and Android counterparts which are made by Foursquare. However, the Symbian version lacks features…
For instance, the Friends tab does list all activities of people on your friends list, but you can’t filter for friends that have “recently checked in” or “who are very close to me”. That’s a big no-no in my book, cause with services like Foursquare – it’s all about location, knowing which of your friends is in your vicinity at any time.
Next, the Places tab doesn’t have search capability! It does use GPS capability of the phone (if it has a GPS receiver) to determine your location, but doesn’t list all nearby locations (some are listed, to be fair). Why this is the case is beyond me. Finally, the Me tab also lacks search, making it hard to find a place you’ve visited some time ago.
In a nutshell, Symbian Foursquare is like a beta product and I’m looking forward to see it improved in due course. Otherwise, I don’t think many regular Foursquare users will download it…
