We knew that the T-Mobile G2 would eventually get some root access lovin on its plate some point soon, but today seems to be that day. With that said, in no way are we suggesting you use the method, as it could brick your shiny new phone.
The XDA is home to some of the best hacks and mods you can put on your Android phone today, and a “ThinkTank” thread was just thrown onto the G2 thread earlier this week. Since not many people have the device yet, the forum has been a little empty, but those that are there seem to be making some progress. The current method of rooting the G2 is only temporary, so even if you’ve got the balls to try it, you may end up losing root after a reboot of the device.
The fellows at XDA will likely figure out a solution to the temporary root, if not come up with a completely new method to make it easier for those who want root access. Once that does happen, and a working recovery image gets loaded onto the thing, you can expect quite a few ROMs to start coming in. Some of the best news to hear is that since the G2 and Desire Z have the same hardware, the ROMs on both devices should work interchangeably together. So, those who are looking for some Sense on their G2 can expect a ROM relatively soon after the device has been rooted.
If you have any contributions to getting root on the G2, hit up the ThinkTank thread over at XDA. It likely won’t take too long to get this root business taken care of, as the devs over at XDA have the reputation of being pretty awesome. Better yet, we can expect to get CyanogenMod support for the G2 as well somewhere down the road as well.
Things are looking pretty good for T-Mobile’s newest Android device, and while it’s not our favorite, it’s time to play the waiting game.
