It was back in October when Opera Software along with 31 other companies joined Wholesale Applications Community (WAC) and now they’ve released their WAC-ready (1.0 specification) widget runtime platform for the Android platform.

This alpha release of Opera’s widget runtime for Android allows developers to get a head start in developing the next step in applications for smartphones. At the same time, the WAC implementation serves as a platform for distribution.

It’s worth pointing that Opera is not new to cross-platform widgets. As a matter of fact, they have already implemented widgets on the Opera desktop browser, Opera Mobile and Opera for devices.

WAC is an alliance of operators and OEMs, such as Vodafone, Verizon, China Mobile, Telenor, Telefonica, AT&T, Samsung, Huawei and others, which work together to define, create and deploy a common mobile application platform.

You can download Opera’s WAC widget runtime from here and read instructions from here. The WAC specifications can be accessed from here.
