Hot on the heels of Samsung’s Froyo trickery earlier this week, we see a confirmation that the Epic 4G update is “on hold” for an unknown amount of time. We’re not terribly sure when any of the U.S. Galaxy S phones will receive the OS upgrade, but it’s more than disheartening to keep having it delayed.
Ever since its debut in the United States, allGalaxy S variants have been stuck on Android 2.1 Eclair and users have been patiently awaiting the Froyo update since. We know that Samsung is doing rather well with its handset sales of the device and you’d imagine that if the Galaxy Tab – which is nothing more than a big Galaxy S phone – can ship with Android 2.2, it shouldn’t be hard to get the handsets that have been around for months at this point to get the same treatment.
It’s anyone’s guess as to when the Epic 4G will be able to get some Froyo love, but it’ll obviously be sometime in 2011. If you’re not into hacking your phone to get Froyo, I’d be a bit upset with Sammy right now. The update was expected to hit the day after Christmas and that day came and went with nothing of the sort in sight. So four months after the debut of the most powerful Galaxy S device, we’re only told that the update that users have been waiting for is not available, without any hint as to when it will be.
We’d like to imagine that the reason for the delay is because Samsung is actually working on the Gingerbread update for their Galaxy S phones, but that sadly doesn’t seem to be the case. Even if it was the case, I’m sure there will still be some upset customers out there and we hear you.
Keep your heads up, Epic 4G users, your time will come. It just won’t be as soon as you were promised.
