Earlier this week at CES 2011, Verizon announced a number of new handsets and devices that will be compatible with its 4G LTE network. We saw the HTC Thunderbolt, LG Revolution, the Samsung 4G LTE smartphone and some mobile hotspots, too. Of course, with this influx of devices we’re also seeing new and improved apps that will be taking advantage of the faster data speeds that these devices and the Verizon network will be delivering.
One such app is SlingPlayer. We’ve seen a lot of neat things from Sling in the past – including remote controls and smartphone apps that allow users to view content – and this year is no different. The media company will be starting a subscription service specifically for Verizon’s 4G network and its LTE capable phones.
Users will need a Slingbox at home and they’ll be able to view home TV on their smartphones with the SlingPlayer app for the new 4G/LTE devices.
PC Mag reports from Sling:
“With significantly increased speeds and reduced latency, the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Mobile Broadband network provides an ideal environment for a fantastic Sling viewing experience with great video quality,” John Gilmore, senior vice president and general manager at Sling Media, said in a statement. “Sling’s subscription offering is a new, easy way for consumers to start enjoying their home TV wirelessly, with one monthly bill from Verizon and without a long term contract for the Sling app.”
What’s nice is that you won’t have to deal with separate bills for the service since it will be billed by Verizon.
With the increased performance of Verizon’s brand-spanking new LTE network, we’re expecting to see even more applications that take advantage of these speeds and lower latency times. Apps that include video streaming, video calling, live online gaming and more will undoubtedly proliferate as Verizon continues its 4G LTE expansion.
