On Thursday, Japan’s Asahi Glass demoed their new ‘Dragontrail’ glass aimed at smartphones and tablets. The glass is said to be 6 times as tough as the conventional stuff we’re used to seeing on today’s devices.
Asahi put their product through the typical key scratch test, but went on to punish the Dragontrail via various stress tests, including some punishing hammer hits. Not bad. The Dragontrail is said to be going up against the now familiar Corning ‘Gorilla Glass‘, and from what I can see, it looks like Asahi has a mighty sturdy and durable product here.
All I ask is the darn thing stand up to key scratches… I’m always tossing my daily driver of choice in my pocket, alongside my keys. It’s one of my nasty habits.
So there you have it. Another new glass that we may see on our beloved smartphones and tablets in the near future. Two thumbs up to Asahi for Dragontrail, I can’t wait for the usual suspects to get their hands on it to put it through more rounds of stress tests. Will Dragontrail compete with Gorilla Glass, or fail miserably? Or perhaps it’ll set a new standard? Time will tell. It always does.
