As part of its strategy to fight competitors like Qualcomm, ST-Ericsson and Freescale, Marvell has been working to develop TD-SCDMA chips for the ever-growing Chinese market, including the recently announced PXA978 single-chip that works both on UMTS and TD-SCDMA 3G networks. Now they’ve teamed-up with ASUS to launch T10 and T20 OPhone smartphones with China Mobile.
The two devices are powered by Marvell PXA920 platform, which is said to be the first commercially available single-chip solution that supports the latest version of Android-based OPhone OMS system. Moreover, both the ASUS T10 and T20 smartphones rock Marvell Avastar 88W8787 wireless solution that integrates 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth (3.0) and FM radios. As such, these smart babies will enable great mobile gaming, multimedia, mobile TV and fast Internet connectivity for its users.
This could be a huge win for ASUS which so far had hard time convincing users and mobile operators in the Western hemisphere to buy/offer their products. Likewise, I don’t recall last time I’ve seen a Marvell CPU-powered smartphone being made by any handset manufacturer…
