XXL Magazine launched its iPhone app, featuring six functions such as a hip-hop news feed, lifestyle trends, “Where They At?” geo-tracker for finding friends, some “special Twitter functions” and the ultimate hip-hop trivia. Moreover — and this is where it gets really interesting — there’s the so called “Ready or Not” part using which consumers can upload their own creative 30-second freestyles to be judged by celebrity guest judges including Lloyd Banks and Sha Money XL, senior VP of A&R at Island Def Jam.
The mentioned features is apparently the industry’s first such capability that allows aspiring rappers to submit their freestyle raps directly to XXL and eventually be featured on the XXL website. Users’ votes, editor picks, and reviews by established hip-hop artists and industry members determine who will get a spot on XXLMag.com, and eventually be discovered by labels, managers, industry heavyweights and other artists…
