Yesterday we reported a rumor regarding Verizon Wireless’ intent to end one-year contracts. Up until now, Verizon has always given its customers the option to sign up for two-year contracts, or one-year contracts and subsidize handsets accordingly. However, for those who prefer short-term commitments, it looks like the one-year option will be gone for good.
PhoneScoop reports:
“Keep in mind, a majority of our customers select a two-year contract when buying our devices, so we are responding to what our customers want. They still have options available, such as two-year contracts, month-to-month and prepaid plans.” Verizon also noted that customers can take advantage of its trade-in program to help defray the cost of device or service upgrades.
It’s true that customers have the option to trade devices in to help offset the cost of new handsets, but it’s probably not nearly as good as the one-year subsidized price. And besides, this isn’t just about upgrading handsets on a yearly basis, it’s about long-term commitment. Any time a new customer signs up with Verizon now, and wants a subsidized handset, the only option is to go the long-haul with two-years.
