T-Mobile’s long awaited new unlimited data plans have finally been made official. Starting today customers will be able to get unlimited talk, text, and data for $60/month if they opt to pay on a month by month basis, and $80/month if they prefer going with a 2 year contract, which we’re assuming includes a handset, since paying more because you’re a loyal customer sounds ass backwards. Anyway, there is a catch to all this. Your data speeds are going to be uncapped for the first 2 GB you use, after that you’ll be throttled down, to a data rate that hasn’t been defined, until your next billing cycle. T-Mobile says that their average customer goes through about 1 GB per month, so this isn’t going to impact a lot of people. Purists are going to complain about this and say that they want faster download speeds, but we think this is more than fair and an absolutely brilliant way at making sure the network stays robust. We’d rather see speed tiers introduced by each of America’s major operators, but that’s something which is still a long ways off.
How exactly will the competition tweak their unlimited plans remains to be seen. The only operator we can think of to offer an even cheaper rate, just $50/month, is Boost Mobile, but their selection of smartphones isn’t exactly what one would call stellar, and since they use CDMA technology you can’t just pop your SIM into another device. That’s probably the best thing about T-Mobile’s plan actually, you can use whatever device you want, and for many IntoMobile readers who regularly import devices from Europe and Asia that’s why they refuse to use anything other than GSM.
