Following up on their Facebook connection, Shazam has just struck up a hell of a deal with eBay to offer free, unlimited music tagging in their Android app. Unlimited tagging in Shazam for Android will go on until January 1, 2012.
If you’ve never had a chance to try it out, Shazam lets you hold up your phone to music while playing, and come back with artist information, lyrics, music videos, shopping options, and recently the ability to see what else your friends have been tagging. It’s the first major app of its kind (Gracenote had been doing stuff for cell phone manufacturers before, I think), and it’s big competition right now is SoundHound, which was recently preloaded on the HTC Incredible 2.
Traditionally, Shazam charged about $5.99 for identify music as much as you wanted, and though that premium version still offers Spotify and Pandora functions, it seems like there’s little reason to pay up now. That being said, I bet eBay will have exclusive advertising rights in the free app until the end of the year (though that’s not quite reflected in the screenshots). Even their latest video still shows the “buy on Amazon” option, which eBay could have happily hijacked.
Whatever the case may be, unlimited music tagging with a ton of social features and downloading options is freakin’ sweet. Go ahead and download the free version of Shazam in the Android Market.
